Three years for man who arranged drug smuggling from prison

first_imgA 27-year-old man from Limassol was jailed for three years on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to a drugs related offence.Pantelis Panayi admitted that while in prison on the British base at Dhekelia for another offence, he conspired in the trafficking of 5.7 kilogrammes of cannabis in June last year.Panayi had been implicated after police picked up a Greek permanent resident of Germany at Larnaca airport carrying 5.7 kilos of cannabis.The man had been approached in Germany and asked to carry the drugs to Cyprus from Athens.He had taken a plane to Athens where he stayed the night and picked up the cannabis. The man was receiving instructions from Athens and the Netherlands, the court heard.Following his arrest, the man agreed to take part in a sting operation and took a taxi that drove him to certain locations in Larnaca as per the instructions of his handlers.A meeting was then arranged in the courtyard of the Saint Lazaros church.
