is being written from Davos so it is from a distance that I have observed the tragic suicide of Rohith Vemula and the events that followed This provides some useful perspective Let me admit that his suicide note brought tears to my eyes because it was so clearly written by a young man filled with hopes and dreams who had become desperate when he saw them die He should never have been rusticated for his protest whether he was Dalit or not It was an appalling error of judgment by the officials of Hyderabad Central University and they should have the grace to resign The ministers in the Modi government who interfered in student politics should also have the grace to resign Having said this may I now say that I have been truly disgusted by the manner in which the usual suspects have tried to make political capital out of so sad a death If they had been this concerned about Dalit student rights why did they not show up in Hyderabad when the protest began Rohith Vemula may still have been alive if he knew his cause was backed by such powerful political leaders Having carefully examined what happened after Rohith’s suicide I find myself unable not to conclude that what we are seeing is yet another attempt to distract the Prime Minister from his economic and social agenda This crusade against Narendra Modi began from almost the moment that he moved into 7 Race Course Road He was personally blamed for the murder of a young computer scientist in Pune He was blamed immediately after for the sickening behaviour of Shiv Sena MPs who shoved food into the mouth of a fasting Muslim Then began a countrywide campaign to malign his government for targeting Christians When the attacks on churches were found to be minor robberies this quickly ended but was instantly followed by an attempt to blame him for the killings of three rationalists Then after the ludicrous campaign against beef caused the murder of Mohammad Akhlaq came nationwide hysteria and the awards-returning movement And now the Prime Minister is being personally held responsible for the suicide of Rohith by politicians who know that if anyone is to blame for Dalits still being an underclass it is the political party that has ruled India for most of her years as a modern nation Watch video: Delhi Police’s brutality on protesting students outside RSS head quarters In two weeks Rohith will be forgotten and Dalits will still be an underclass because they have been an underclass for centuries But in the hysteria whipped up over his death will be forgotten the very important speech that the Prime Minister gave in Vigyan Bhawan when he told young entrepreneurs that his government would help them in every possible way to start new businesses In this speech he admitted that all government needed to do was facilitate their spirit of enterprise and help finance it There may be those who believe that this should not be the job of government but of venture capitalists but Muhammad Yunus who started the Grameen Bank who is here in Davos praised the ‘Start Up India Stand Up India Scheme’ He said that he believed that the best way to help people lift themselves out of poverty was to finance their efforts to create small businesses As someone who has gone on and on in this column about the need to create jobs I listened carefully and now concede that perhaps my emphasis was wrong Muhammad Yunus said that what very poor people needed most were banks that were not reluctant to give them loans Inadvertently this amounted to praise for the Prime Minister’s emphasis on financial inclusion that has brought more Indians into the banking system than ever before These are economic reforms for which he has never been given credit because we media types have been so absorbed in saving secularism The Prime Minister’s determined efforts to put social programmes like Swachh Bharat and Beti Bachao at the top of the national agenda are truly commendable But if noticed at all by the media they have evoked mostly sneers and sarcasm None of our mighty political pundits has noticed that these programmes touch the core of what is wrong with India’s model of development Toilets are more important than temples improved public hygiene will end half of India’s diseases and educating little girls will make India a far far better place So it is my hope that Rohith Vemula’s tragic death does not become another link in the noose that has been steadily built over the past 18 months to strangle Modi’s efforts to bring parivartan and vikas One thing the Prime Minister can and should do is begin to dismantle the licence raj in education that gives semi-literate officials too much power to cause too much harm in our universities The author tweets @tavleen_singh For all the would completely rule out another upset They beat the Netherlands home and away in qualifying as the Dutch failed to reach Euro 2016 and in the group stages at the finals have drawn with Cristiano later the Gurdwara Sis Ganj management committee stopped officials from the demolition and a crowd gathered Share This Article Related Article Manager of the Gurdwara Balwant Singh Pandher said police along with the MCD officials reached the Gurdwara at around 6 am “We were not informed and they did not even serve us a notice First they demolished the barriers erected near the water booth on the the demolition was carried out at least 50 protesters sat on the road blocking the traffic The protesters included the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee member Inderjeet Singh Monty who said “There is a lot of space for people to walk beside the water booth and many people drink water from it I don’t understand the rationale behind demolishing it” The court had on March 28 directed the the four-time champions to the World Cup finals "I lost only two games in two years" Ventura told Italian television show Le Iene in a brief interview as he boarded a flight to Bari Italy coach Gian Piero Ventura during the World Cup qualifying play-off second leg match between Italy and Sweden AP The 69-year-old is under contract until June 2020 but has not resigned despite a 1-0 aggregate play-off defeat to Sweden that saw Italy miss the World Cup for the first time in 60 years "I apologised to Italians for this result It’s horrible to see a World Cup without Italy but it’s done now and I can’t do anything about it" Ventura disagreed with the journalist interviewing him that the Azzurri had played "very badly" for the past two years "No because my record is one of the best of the last 40 years I lost only two games in two years" added Ventura The coach’s future should be decided during a meeting of the Italian football federation in Rome on Wednesday Since the former Torino coach took over in July 2016 Italy have lost three matches — against France in Bari (3-1) Spain in Madrid (3-0) and against Sweden in the World Cup first-leg play-off in Solna (1-0) — winning nine and drawing four It has been estimated that Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 could cost the economy 1 billion in lost sponsorship and business "It will be sad But what can I do Unfortunately it’s done" added the Italy coach Ventura made no announcement about his position after Monday’s second leg 0-0 draw against Sweden despite failing to lead the 1934 1938 1982 and 2006 winners to their 19th World Cup The former Torino coach said he would first talk to the Italian football federation president Carlo Tavecchio who is also under pressure to resign before making a decision on his future "Resign I don’t know I have to evaluate an infinity of things I have not yet spoken to the president" said Ventura "It doesn’t depend on me I’m not in the state of mind sacked by Bayern Munich India’s hockey coach Paul van Ass’ brief tenure is all set to end following a bitter public spat with Hockey Indian President Narinder Batra after a special committee today recommended his removal from the position The nine-member committee headed by Harbinder Singh formed to decide on his future has recommended that Van Ass who had claimed that he has been fired following his altercation with Batra should not be continued File picture of Paul van Ass AFP As per the procedure it is now for Hockey India to make a formal announcement about the Dutchman’s future with Indian hockey Van Ass had taken over as the coach from Terry Walsh incidentally also sacked after a spat with Batra just five months ago The development leaves India without a coach with barely a year to go for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for which the team has already qualified by virtue of their gold medal in last year’s Asian Games The committee’s decision also puts an end to days of uncertainty over the future of the Dutchman who had gone on record to say that he was willing to come back as coach provided there was no interference "We gave our recommendation to Hockey India Hockey India and Sports Authority of India will now take the final call" Harbinder told PTI When prodded further Harbinder said "He has not yet submitted his report on Hockey World League semifinals He is not taking our calls nor responding to our mails The tickets were sent to him but he lied he didn’t receive any tickets " "Under such circumstances the committee has worked under the assumption that Paul won’t return There is no question of him returning But Hockey India will take the final decision based on our report" Asked whether they had recommended the appointment of a new foreign coach or give the reins of the team to High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans till the Olympics Harbinder said: We are not mandated to talk about it We have given our suggestion to Hockey India and it is confidential" It has been learnt that most probably Oltmans will be given charge of the men’s team till the Rio Olympics as the committee feels with just a year to go for the mega event the Dutchman is the right person to take over the reins of the team instead of appointing a new foreign coach Oltmans has been associated with Indian hockey for nearly three years and knows the requirement of the team having worked with the players for quite some time now To add to it the players also gell well with Oltmans and some have even aired their views of handing the reins of the team to the Dutchman after Van Ass’ ouster Besides the Van Ass issue the committee also reviewed India’s performance in the Hockey World League Semifinals in Antwerp Belgium where they finished fourth The committee felt one bad tournament doesn’t call for a drastic overhaul in the team "There is one year still left for the Olympics We discussed what steps need to to be taken from here on to produce a good showing in the Olympics" Harbinder said The marathon four-hour long meeting at the Hockey India headquarters here was attended by Harbinder B P Govinda A B Subbaiah V Bhaskaran Thoiba Singh R P predecessors Jose Brasa Michael Nobbs and Terry Walsh — all of whom were hired by Sports Authority of India on the recommendations of HI at hefty salaries — also left the country on an unceremonious the new Olympic TV channel IOC Olympic Games executive director Christophe Dubi said however that they will have to respect the traditional rules of not attacking their adversaries and strict equality on transport accommodation security and what athletes and spectators can expect Legacy burden "In the third phase the concept and vision are defined This is really where cities can talk with the IOC members" said Jacqueline Barrett the IOC’s associate director for Olympic bids First raised in the early 2000s the legacy chapter is now considered one of the most important parts of the Games campaign IOC president Bach’s Agenda 2020 has sought to clampdown on excessive spending and produce Games that leave lasting facilities rather than just a two-week spectacle IOC members are now meant to pay particular attention to infrastructure and natural resources human resources and the climate "We have learned a learned a lot from the past" said Dubi highlighting the case of 2004 hosts Athens which spent billions of dollars on facilities that have not survived "The science and the social context have changed With Athens we had difficulties to force the government to not develop permanent sites The IOC’s leverage on organisers then is not the same today Today we ask for a legacy plan for each site which was not the case at the time" While the 2012 London Games were considered one of the best ever — despite the cost and difficulties to reuse the Olympic Stadium and disappointing numbers inspired to take up sport — the 2014 Sochi Winter Games will be remembered for its $50 billion outlay Last year’s Rio Games have left a mixed memory Transport has been improved but the Deodoro Olympic complex has already been closed and the legendary Maracana stadium has been left in disrepair amid a legal battle over who is responsible Los Angeles and Paris both vaunt the fact that most of their sites are already built with the American city even turning to stadia used for its 1984 Games Budapest is just making promises to provide global standard facilities The IOC also looks at employment the environment and how the Games can inspire people to take up sport These criteria are more
